CRITICAL REVIEW

Hans Fackelmann was born in 1930, in Arad county, and between 1952 and 1958 he attended ’’Ion Mincu” Institute of Architecture, in Bucharest. Once awarded an architect’s degree, he began his career as designing architect within the Design Institute in Timișoara. While working as an architect, he succeeded in overcoming the limits imposed by Stalinist influences, marked by standardization, characterizing the architecture practised at the time in Romania, creating a unitary, elegant, and complex architecture that focused on the relation between public and private space, considering space perception and generating experiences. Hans Fackelmann is an emblematic figure for the thriving period in post-war architecture in Romania, and is known as a functionalist architect. During his career, spanning almost 20 years, he designed together with his wife, Aurelia Fackelmann, who was an architect herself. In 1970 he became a conferentiary within the Polytechnic Institute in Timișoara, which gave him the opportunity to contribute significantly to the School of Architecture in Timișoara by shaping young generations of future remarkable architects. Fackelmann proved his teaching excellence by winning over students with his warmth and personal charm, stirring their creative spirit and guiding them without imposing solutions for finding the most appropriate way to solve a particular the project. He manifested his creative force for a short period of time before he was overtaken by an unforgiving disease. Hans Fackelmann stands out as a unique personality, and as one of the architects who had a remarkable contribution to an important page in the history of Romanian architecture.
